It's not unusual to see children with malformations of the mouth, nose or both. It's not unusual to see these children being abandoned and secluded. It's not unusual for many of these children to live in complete isolation from the world around them. It's not unusual to see how many people don't understand the severity of this problem around the World.
This birth defect is called cleft lip, cleft palate or just cleft for short. A cleft is formed in the fetus when the pregnant woman lacks the proper nutrition to support her fetus or by other genetic disorder. Unknowingly, she continues to carry this future baby without proper care, supplemental prenatal vitamins, and assistance. But it's not her fault.
Many of these children will be born with cleft, unable to learn to talk properly or to be able to eat or drink adequately. And also it's worth mentioning the poor self esteem they will develop. Many of these children will be born in countries where medical technology is not up to date with the rest of the world.
Most of these countries are incapacitated with the proper medical equipment, medicine, or even a hospital close by. Many of these families can't even afford the surgery somewhere else. But many families do travel. They travel by foot. They travel by any means to find medical answers for their children. However, some families are unaware that cleft can easily be fixed with surgery.
